Penelope Cruz Joins The Long-Awaited ‘Zoolander 2’

Ben Stiller’s Zoolander has the unfortunate timing to be released in theaters on September 28th, 2001, just a scant few days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks forever changed America. The film – a funny, idiotic satire of the fashion industry with hilarious performances from stars Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell – may have been a bit too ridiculous for audiences to fully embrace so quickly after a massive national disaster, but it built a strong following in the ensuing years and you’ll still hear people quoting it today, almost fifteen years after it originally debuted.

Penelope Cruz 2

When asked about a follow-up, most of the cast and creatives behind the original have been non-committal, talking about how they’d all be interested if such a thing ever came to fruition, but aside from talks of a script being written by Tropic Thunder scribe Justin Theroux, we haven’t heard anything concrete about a sequel. That changed today, when Deadline mentioned that Penelope Cruz is signing on to star in Zoolander 2. There’s no word yet on which character she’ll play, but Stiller will definitely be back as the title character and Cruz could end up playing herself, since people like David Bowie and Billy Zane played themselves the first time around. It seems like the somewhat surprising success of Dumb and Dumber To has given studios a bit of confidence that long-awaited sequels can still play to their original audiences, and with other comedies like Joe Dirt 2 coming soon, there’s really no excuse not to give a Zoolander sequel a chance.

Chances are very good that we’ll see both Ferrell and Wilson reprising their roles from the original as well, so I’d say it’s finally time for fans of the original to start getting excited about this becoming a real possibility.
