Roland Emmerich Planning a Stargate Film Reboot

By September 7, 2013

This is not a drill…but is it a good idea?

After announcing Independence Day 2 could be in theatres in time for its 20th anniversary in 2016, director Roland Emmerich has let the world know that he has plans to reboot another beloved sci-fi fan favorites, Stargate.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Stargate’s co-writer/director Emmerich said, “”We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot…and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts. Pretty soon we’ll have to look for a writer and start.”

Three parts, eh?

That’s great, but I have a couple problems with that…

Unlike the possibility of a Will Smith appearance in ID2,  Emmerich has no plans (yet) to include Stargate’s original stars Kurt Russell (Col. Jonathan “Jack” O’Neill) and James Spader (Dr. Daniel Jackson) as they’ve aged considerably in the 22 years since the film’s 1994 release and “the actors look totally different…it would not work.”

Well, to that I say BOO. The whole fun of the original was seeing Spader (up til then known for roles in movies like Pretty In Pink) being a nerd and Russell as well, hell – anything Kurt Russell does is rocket sauce.

Know who HAS aged quite well since 1994 and SHOULD be considered for said trilogy reboot?

Erick Avari (Kasuf)

Kasuf and his son Skaara (Alexis Cruz, below) are the ONLY two actors who went from the film to reprise their roles for the TV series.

My hope is that Emmerich recognizes these two gentleman are THE fan favorites and  if we’re talking a reboot, the TV series hasn’t happened in the timeline, meaning Kasuf and Skaara haven’t ascended to a higher plane of existence…so by all accounts they COULD be introduced into the trilogy. And the fact that neither one of them look like they’ve aged more than ten years is a HUGE plus.

As Alexis Cruz a.k.a. Skaara himself will be joining me this week on Gecken, we’re gonna talk about this very subject…so if you’ve got any questions or comments for Alexis about Stargate or anything else he’s done, leave ’em in the comments below!
