Hot on the heels of Fast & Furious director Justin Lin jumping on to direct some episodes of “True Detective” season 2, there are even more rumors being thrown around regarding the highly-anticipated return of the HBO series. Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn seem all but locked for the show at this point, but the female lead has been a tougher nut to crack. There was talk that “Mad Men” star Elisabeth Moss was in contention, followed by rumors that Rachel McAdams could star, but now a whole slew of new names have come into the picture.
The Wrap says that while Moss and McAdams shouldn’t be counted out just yet, series creator Nic Pizzolatto and HBO are auditioning a larger group of actresses this week for the coveted role. Those names include Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel (above), Oona Chaplin, Brit Marling, Kelly Reilly, Jaimie Alexander, and Malin Akerman (right to left, below).
According to the outlet’s power rankings (which basically seem like the reporter’s personal opinion) of likelihood to end up with the role, Marling and Chaplin (who played Talissa on “Game of Thrones”) are on the bottom of the list, while Alexander, Akerman, and Reilly are a step up from that. Biel is one step higher, and Dawson seems to be The Wrap’s choice for the actress with the best chance to lock down the part. Again, not much to go on there but the reporter’s own opinion, so I wouldn’t be surprised if any of these ladies ultimately got the role. Nothing has been signed yet.
Dawson, while a great choice, has already signed on to Netflix’s “Daredevil” series, so unless scheduling can be worked out, she seems like one of the least likely candidates in my mind. I’d love to see Brit Marling in a high-profile show like this, because the recognizability could be excellent for the indie writer/actress and it may allow her to finance some projects down the road that would otherwise be a tougher sell. Moss is still my favorite personal choice for this part among all of these actresses listed here, but we’ll have to see how it all plays out in a couple weeks when casting is finally finalized.
Who would you like to see earn the female lead role in “True Detective” season 2?
