Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a film that seems to have been on quite a long odyssey toward its eventual release date next March. While we’ve seen the occasional still photo here and there of characters like Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, the only place that has ever seen any footage of the film is San Diego Comic Con 2014, which showed the briefest glimpse at a conflict between the World’s Finest heroes.
The arrival of the first trailer for the film has been teased for nearly a year, with some sources confirming that it would be attached to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and others insisting that it would arrive in some form with either the release of Jupiter Ascending, or during the telecast of this year’s Super Bowl. Neither ended up being true, of course, but that backstory is necessary in order to preface the latest unconfirmed rumor about its release.
According to Collider, sources indicate that the first teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be attached to the May 15th theatrical release of Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth installment in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi film. It make sense, given that it’s a Warner Bros. film, and by that point most audiences will already have seen the most highly anticipated superhero film of the year, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Fury Road is Warner Bros. big film of the summer, and with Avengers fever starting to wind down by that point — conceivably, anyway — the Collider report speculates that WB execs see that as the ideal time to get the hype machine rolling on the film that they hope will kick off the DC Comics-based cinematic universe.
Batman v Superman‘s trailer presence has already been surprisingly barren, since the first trailers for WB’s last three tentpole superhero films — The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Man of Steel, respectively — debuted their first teasers right at or right near a full year before the film hit theaters. With the production timeline for this film going back so long, though, its curious that we haven’t seen even an animated logo on a screen, let alone a full teaser.
The approach to the early marketing cycle on Batman v Superman represents a different philosophy than we’ve seen previously, perhaps one of greater caution now that Warner Bros. is basically working to regain the confidence of audiences and fans now that The Dark Knight Trilogy has concluded, and since Man of Steel proved to be so divisive.
Time will tell if this rumor proves to be correct. Mad Max: Fury Road opens in theaters on May 15th, while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will open on March 25th, 2016.
