Scarlett Johasson to Kick Ass in Luc Besson Action Thriller Lucy

By April 26, 2013

There’s nothing quite like watching a Luc Besson action movie. They’re almost always utterly ridiculous, but if you’re an action junkie, you’ll most likely leave the theater with a big smile on your face. (That being said, please don’t ever watch From Paris With Love. Trust me, it’s awful.) If you’re unfamiliar with his work, Besson is the guy who directed Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element and produced Jason Statham’s Transporter films, Liam Neeson’s Taken movies, the impressive parkour flick District B13, and a solid French thriller called Tell No One that Ben Affleck has been eyeing to remake for American audiences.

Now The Hollywood Reporter has some good news for us, revealing that Scarlett Johansson will be starring in a new action film called Lucy, which will be Besson’s next directorial effort. Besson has a history of putting sexy ladies in the spotlight and letting them do some serious damage in his action movies, from La Femme Nikita, to Natalie Portman in Leon: The Professional, to Milla Jovovich in The Fifth Element, Zoe Saldana in Colombiana, and many more.

The high concept script centers on a woman named Lucy (Johansson) who is forced to become a drug mule. But instead of transporting the drug, it somehow gets into her bloodstream and changes her into an ass-kicking badass who can absorb knowledge instantaneously (whoa), move objects with her mind, and doesn’t feel pain. This sounds exactly like the kind of project that fits squarely into Besson’s wheelhouse, and even though it’s been a while since he’s directed anything worthwhile, teaming with Johansson could be just the spark he needs to snap him out of his slump.

For ScarJo, this will be yet another opportunity for the actress to show off her fighting skillz after making quite an impression as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. She’s currently filming Captain America: The Winter Soldier and has The Avengers 2 lined up soon, so we’ll be seeing more of her in that black leather soon enough, but working on Lucy is a chance for her to finally shine as the true lead of an action movie instead of being a secondary character. If this sequence from The Avengers is any indication, those drug runners are in some serious trouble:

Are you excited to see Johansson team up with Besson? How sweet would it be if her character Lucy crossed paths with Jason Statham’s Transporter character Frank Martin at some point? (Spoiler alert: The answer is “really sweet.”) Let us know if you think ScarJo can excel in a Besson-led action joint in the comments below.
