SDCC ’13 Recap: ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Panel

By July 21, 2013

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is set to return for its 9th season, which will feature the show’s 100th episode.

Comic-Con attendees were lucky enough to catch a sneak peak of the new season, as the entire first episode was screened.

The episode is entitled ‘The Gang Broke Dee.’ In the episode, Dee (Kaitlin Olson) finds herself in a deep depression, which Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Reynolds), Mac (Rob McElhenney), and Frank (Danny DeVito) try to break her of. Charlie, Mac, and Frank decide to set her up with a gig at a local comedy club, anticipating giving her pity laughs. They find that the few people in the club actually find her routine funny, leading to a sudden incline in her comedic career. The result of the fame ended in a twist that will have fans crying tears of laughter and joy. But, telling such a wonderful ending would ruin the surprise.

There wasn’t much time for audience Q&As after the screening, but one audience member did ask an interesting question to the panel: “Would you want to hang out with your characters?” McElhenney responds, “No. I think that’s why they hang out with each other. No one else will.” Despite the flaws each character inarguably has, the interactions based heavily around such character traits is what makes the show so hilarious, and what has ultimately made the show run for the nine seasons it has.

The show will be opening FX’s new channel FXX on September 12th, and if this episode was any indication of what the new season promises, fans won’t want to miss it.
