‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Begins Production, Steven Moffat Teases the Series’ Impending Climax

By April 6, 2016

Production on the highly-anticipated fourth season of Sherlock has officially begun, following the release of a Christmas special late last year as well, which sent Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman’s James Watson back in time to their Victorian London roots. The new season will feature three all-new adventures from the lead duo, and following the surprise twist at the end of season three as well, it could also feature the return of the series’ most beloved villain.

Rachel Talalay will direct the first episode of the new season as well, making her the first female director to helm a Sherlock episode, and in a statement for the new season, showrunner Steven Moffat talked about continuing Sherlock and Watson’s story, and the series possibly reaching its climax this season:

“Sherlock series four —— here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street, and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and terror and tragedy are looming. This is the story we’’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.”

I suppose we’re probably just supposed to take that however we want for the time being, but if Moffat is saying that season four will bring the climax of the series, it makes you wonder what kind of a future Sherlock could have after the newest season.

Benedict Cumberbatch added:

“[I am] genuinely thrilled to be back filming ‘Sherlock’ with all the cast and crew. I can’t wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait… though not for long… And it will be worth it.”

In addition, PBS Masterpiece also unveiled a new synopsis for the season as well, which teases a brand new addition to the show’s main ensemble:

“Season 4 begins with the mercurial Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), back once more on British soil as Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman) and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.”

Sherlock + a Baby can only, only bring about good things, right?

After what I believe to be an all-around stellar first two seasons, and a mostly satisfying third outing as well, it’ll be interesting to see how the newest Sherlock season goes, as both stars’ profiles have grown exponentially since the series began, and if it will live up to its Moriarty promise at the end of the last season. For right now though, with the first woman director at the helm finally, and a new baby added to the cast, today brings mostly sunshine and daisies for all of you Sherlock fans out there.

Sherlock season 4 does not currently have a premiere date.
