If you’ve been getting a kick out of celebrities pretending to sing songs in a head-to-head competition on Spike TV, then we have good news.
“Lip Sync Battle,” the new Spike TV program that has gone instantly viral every week since its debut, has just been picked up for 20 more episodes. That means there’s plenty more celebrity lip syncing on the way for the internet to gush over.
For those who don’t know, “Lip Sync Battle” is inspired by the competition between Jimmy Fallon and celebrities that was such a sensation on “The Tonight Show,” and pits two celebrities against each other, both lip syncing a pair of songs to see who takes home a “coveted” championship belt. Here’s a recent example featuring Anne Hathaway:
Other contestants so far include Anna Kendrick, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson, Common, John Legend and Jimmy Fallon himself. The show doesn’t really sustain itself beyond being made for viral clips the next day, but it’s definitely fun to see these celebs cut loose in a way we otherwise might not get to see. And audiences are responding too, because it’s Spike’s most watched original program ever.
However, if I were to complain about anything, it’s the presence of Chrissy Teigen. Even though the show is hosted by LL Cool J, the swimsuit model is the colorful commentator who offers nothing of value to the series. She’s not funny, amusing or even coherent sometimes. Teigen is there to look pretty, and I wish she would just go away. I’m sorry, but there’s no other way to say it.
Anyway, “Lip Sync Battle” will finish out this inaugural season, and there won’t be any of these new episodes until 2016, so fans will have to get their lip syncing from the rest of YouTube. If you feel like watching the show on TV, it airs Thursdays at 10/9c, but you can just clips online the next day.
