Star Wars Celebration (Finally) Introduces Alden Ehrenreich as the Young Han Solo

By July 17, 2016

After basically a full year of speculation and numerous reports following the film’s initial announcement last summer, Disney and Lucasfilm have finally confirmed that Alden Ehrenreich, the long-speculated frontrunner for the role, will be playing a young Han Solo in the currently untitled 2018 film from Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The announcement came today from Star Wars Celebration Europe in London, during the Future Filmmakers panel with Rian Johnson (Episode VIII), Lord and Miller, Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, moderated by Lucasfilm story group’s Pablo Hidalgo. There were also special guest appearances made by John Boyega, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher.

Eric Goldman from IGN tweeted these out from the panel as well:

Now, this is noticeably longer hair for Ehrenreich as well, and if it is for the young Han Solo role and not another project, it seems like they’re going for the A New Hope-era style for the character.

Ehrenreich was apparently the very first actor to audition for the role out of 3,000 actors. It was also confirmed that the Hail, Caesar! breakout star has in fact screentested on the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca as well. Considering this was basically common knowledge for the fan base now, it doesn’t come as that much of a surprise, and I’ve already said previously how surprisingly excited I am to see his take on the iconic character. I suppose it’s nice for the studio to make it official though, finally.

The currently untitled film is sett o hit theatres on May 25th, 2018.
