Star Wars: Episode VII may be delayed because of Harrison Ford’s broken leg, according to a rumor from UK-based site Jedi News. According to the site, there was an emergency meeting about this very thing this morning at Pinewood Studios, where the film is currently being shot. To be clear, we do not have studio confirmation on this, but the report states the Ford’s injuries are worse than previously reported and my have him out for “six months, possibly a lot longer.”
So, what does this mean for production? It could mean that the December 18, 2015 release date that had so many people (including me) wondering how the heck they could get a film like Star Wars done in so little time, may have to be pushed back. It could also mean rewrites that could shrink Ford’s role.
Ford’s injury, which happened on the set and involved the door to the Millennium Falcon, is also rumored to cause the actor’s return to the USA for a while. Again, please note that this is all still rumor at the point, and there are a lot of those floating around, especially after photos of Ford in a wheelchair surfaced. The site MakingStarWars claims that a note went around talking about changes in scheduling, but there wouldn’t be any changes made to the script. Lucasfilm then told TheForce.net that there would be no changes to the release date.
If they did change the release date, and production is delayed for 6 months, it’s a possibility that the film could be released in May 2016, which Star Wars purists would likely appreciate as May is the traditional Star Wars release month. If that happens, it would be up against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Captain America 3. Stiff competition, but it is Star Wars, after all. It’s unlikely to fail against anything.
What do you guys think? Should they rewrite Ford’s role or push the film back? Let us know in the comments.
