‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Box Office Update: We Have a New #1

By January 6, 2016

Twenty days. That’s not even three full weeks. Twenty days is all it took, and now Star Wars: The Force Awakens has surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar to become the #1 grossing domestic film of all time (not counting for inflation, inflation doesn’t matter, stop talking about inflation). Cue the medal ceremony theme music.

According to THR, The Force Awakens total as of yesterday stood at $758.2 million, just shy of Avatar‘s $760.5 million take from 2009 (it will set the record today). Cameron’s film took in $750 million during it’s initial 7 month run, with another $10 million coming in during its re-release. And that was really impressive, until Force Awakens beat that IN TWENTY FREAKING DAYS. Who’s the king of the world now, huh? Oh wait…that was that other Cameron movie that Force Awakens passed at the box office. Never mind.

Now, there’s still a long way to go before Force Awakens brings home the big prize, which also belongs to Avatar. The #1 grossing movie of all time ever still holds the record at $2.7 billion, whereas Star Wars has only brought in a paltry $1.5 billion so far. But the folks in a galaxy far, far away still have one ace up their sleeve: China. The film opens there on January 9th, which should lead to a huge spike in its global box office take. Whether or not it’ll be enough to topple Avatar (again) remains to be seen. But hey, if they can help Transformers 4 make $1 billion, surely they can do even more for a movie that’s actually, you know, really good.

Want to help the cause? Go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens again. It’s still in theaters, ya know.
