‘Straight Outta Compton’ to ‘Fast and Furious’ – F. Gary Gray Secures ‘Fast 8’

By October 6, 2015

That took all of about four hours and some change…

After word broke from TheWrap stating director F. Gary Gray of Straight Outta Compton was the front runner to take the reigns of the eighth movie in the Fast and Furious franchise, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety dropped word that two to three other directors were also on the list of potential  ‘front runners.’ Now, from another Vin Diesel Facebook post and late night report from Variety (again) comes confirmation that F. Gary Gray will be taking on the project.

As I said in my previous report, Gray is the obvious and best choice to take on the anticipated eighth sequel in the long running franchise. His Straight Outta Compton helped secure Universal as the clear winner at the box office with record breaking hits that included Furious 7 and Jurassic World.

Gray’s critically acclaimed entry held the top spot at the box office for weeks in its initial run adding prestige and awards talk to its impressive box office haul. His choosing now, over others such as Louis Leterriet (The Transporter), Adam Wingard (The Guest) and William Eubank (The Signal) add a new level of interest for me. I imagine that is the essential draw of a director of this caliber; he’s capable of handling complex action sequences while keeping his characters front and center. In my opinion, he is the most talented director to take on a movie in this franchise.

A fact not lost on Vin Diesel I’m sure who was mentioned as meeting with each director before a decision was made. Obviously, the meeting was tonight (and went well) as Vin posted this pic on his Facebook page earlier.

More updates to come as soon as they become available. But for now, it looks like Gray will lead Diesel, The Rock and the rest of the main cast into new and interesting territory.

Fast 8 arrives in theatres April 14, 2017.
