Due likely to its massive number of cast members and star names, there have been several of the Suicide Squad members who have somewhat fallen by the wayside in the promotional campaign and marketing materials for the film up until this point. None quite as shockingly though, as Karen Fukuhara’s Katana, who still has yet to speak a single line in any of the trailers.
There have been some interesting shots of the character in the trailers though, including one of her in deep despair from the SDCC teaser last year, and one recently, in which she throws Captain Boomerang up against a wall.
While recently speaking with Comicbook.com as well, Fukuhara teased Katana’s role in the film, and more specifically, how she acts as a member of the team:
“She’s very loyal to Amanda Waller and Rick Flag. She works under them and keeps a rowdy bunch in line. She’s a protector and a fierce warrior.”
As for Katana’s infamous sword in the film? Fukuhara is very excited for audiences to see Soultaker in action:
“She has her husband’s soul in her sword and I got to talk to Maseo throughout the film and yes, of course that’s the in the film, but you’ll have to wait and see how much of the plays into the movie.”
She also went on briefly to basically reiterate what everyone else has already said about Jared Leto and his “method” performance as The Joker:
“I’ve seen him on set, I’ve met him, I’ve introduced myself, but everything has been like, ‘Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Hi, pretty.’ I’d be like, ‘Hi, I’m Karen,’ and he’d be like, ‘Haaaa.'”
What’s interesting and I think one of the reasons that she maybe hasn’t been lumped into the marketing quite like any of the other characters, is because Katana isn’t really a villain, so even during the sequence where it looks like the Task Force X villains get separated from the heroes and A.R.G.U.S., it’s possible that Katana may not tag along with the group for their mini-bar excursion.
Nonetheless, Soultaker visually looks exciting, and I’m looking forward to seeing how David Ayer and crew are planning on incorporating her into the story here, especially after her most recent onscreen iteration on CW’s Arrow.
Suicide Squad is set to hit theatres on August 5th.
