Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Kylo Ren is Not a Sith in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, According to J.J. Abrams

Out of all of the Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens characters, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) seems to be the focal point of nearly every theory and all the speculation going on among the fans. All in all, we don’t really know all that much about the character yet though. We know that he got the name “Ren” like Darth Vader came to “Darth” and is a title that he gained from the “Knights of Ren”. It was confirmed that he is a collector of Sith artifacts who is obsessed with the history of the Dark Side. We know that he built the red trisaber himself, and that the turbulent and chaotic look it gives off, is a reflection of Kylo’s emotional and mental state in the movie. However, that’s about it.

New images of the character have been making their way to the public the past few weeks as well, with new issues of both EW and Empire Magazine offering fans new looks at the film. While we don’t know much, it seems like whatever conflict is taking place between the light side and dark side of the force in Episode VII, Kylo Ren looks to be near the center of it all. At least, we think he is.

During a recent interview featured for the new Force Awakens-themed issue Empire Magazine, J.J. Abrams revealed some new details about Kylo Ren, and what his position is in the movie. Check out his full quote below:

“Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”

He also spoke on the inspiration for the First Order in the film, and referenced how the Nazis inspired this new Empire:

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’ What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”

That’s certainly interesting, and the parallels to the Nazi Order were pretty clear from the moment the first time images of the First Order were even revealed. However, the actual real-life inspiration makes this new Empire in the film even more interesting, and it’ll be exciting to see if the First Order winds up being even stronger than the original Empire, or not. Only time will tell.

For those of you who might not remember too, Supreme Leader Snoke is a motion-capture, digital character played by Andy Serkis in the film. While no official images of the character have surfaced online – keeping his actual look a mystery – fans have gotten to hear Snoke speak as he growled the voice over in the first teaser for The Force Awakens that was released last year. So while this new information from Abrams does make some things a little less clear, it’s obvious that Snoke is this trilogy’s new Emperor Palpatine. I think we can all safely assume that at this point.

However, this does make Kylo Ren’s character even more interesting. While not a lot was confirmed or even official regarding his character or his backstory up until this point, it seemed obvious that he was at least a Sith in the movie. Now that Abrams has revealed Ren isn’t though, it should not only make fans wonder what his motivations and origins are, but also who the other Sith in the film might be.

There are always two Sith force users at one time in the SW universe, that much has been established. There’s a Padawan and a Master, until the Padawan either is replaced or kills their Master. So if Kylo Ren is not an actual Sith in the movie, that means there is still another position open for either the Master or the Padawan alongside Snoke. Or it’s possible that the movie is completely doing away with the Rule of Two. I honestly don’t know at this point because with one new piece of new information, J.J. Abrams has just created a million new questions.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set to be released on December 18th.
