Terry Gilliam Initiates Casting For Resurrected ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’

By May 18, 2014

Good news for fans of the brilliant and innovative filmmaker Terry Gilliam! It looks like the director and his producer, Adrian Guerra, will be meeting with actors next week to begin casting for the resurrected The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. According to Variety, the movie is set to start filming in the Canary Islands in early 2015.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has become infamous for its inability to get off the ground. It originally went into production in 2000 with Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp as the two leads, but it was scrapped when Rochefort was injured and unable to continue shooting. A documentary that chronicled the trouble first production, Lost in La Mancha, was released n 2002.

Despite casting high-profile actors (usually a sure-bet to lock down financing) a few years later, the team failed to raise the money to produce another take on the material, which was set to star Ewan McGregor and Robert Duvall as Don Quixote.

When rumors started circulating that Gilliam would once again be attempting the project, Duvall had this to say in an interview with ComingSoon:

Terry Gilliam has said that he wants me to come to Spain to play Don Quixote in his movie. I don’t know if it will ever come to be. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Well, it looks like the project will be happening, but probably not with Duvall. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, veteran actor John Hurt said recently at a public Q&A that he would be taking on the Quixote role. I love Duvall, but Hurt is one of my favorite actors ever, so that’s making me even more excited about the project, and even kind of glad it’s been delayed. Maybe everything does happen for a reason.

Whatever the details might be, I think we can all agree that any new work by Gilliam should be highly anticipated, but I for one am especially psyched to see his modern-day Don Quixote vision finally come to life. Fingers crossed!

What are your thoughts on the project? Do you think it’ll actually be completed this time? Let us know in the comments!
