‘The Defenders’ Adds Sigourney Weaver as a Villain

By October 9, 2016

As we mentioned earlier today, Marvel and Netflix had a major presence with their Iron Fist panel at New York Comic Con, which also introduced the first trailer for the upcoming series. But it wouldn’t be a Marvel panel without a few surprises, and as the cast Q&A was wrapping, a familiar voiceover interrupted with “one batch… two batch…”

Needless to say the fans in the audience went crazy, and Jon Bernthal walked out onstage to announce that filming had begun on The Punisher, for which he would reprise his role from the second season of Daredevil. He told the audience:

“Look, I believe in Frank and his journey and I’m fascinated by it. To the fans of the comic and to the members of law enforcement and members of the military, I’m just so grateful that we get the opportunity to tell another chapter. I give my word on behalf of this cast and this crew that we’re going to do our very best.”

Not to be outdone, Finn Jones returned to invite some “friends” to say hello to the audience, with Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage) appearing to a thunderous ovation. Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb reminded the audience that all four heroes would be teaming up for The Defenders.

But Loeb wasn’t quite done yet, allowing the applause to die down so he could reveal an even bigger surprise by introducing the newest cast member – and the villain the team would be facing off against – Sigourney Weaver. Loeb stopped short of revealing which character the legendary geek icon would portray, so look forward to several months of speculation about that as fan begin fleshing out their theories and predictions.

No official release date has been announced for The Defenders – while the series was originally expected to air late next year, the fact that Bernthal has already begun production on The Punisher seems to indicate that it will show up first, potentially moving The Defenders to a 2018 release window. As always, we’ll keep you posted as more news becomes available.
