The Dragon is Revealed in First Trailer for ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’

We still don’t agree with Peter Jackson and Warner Bros.’ decision to turn The Hobbit into three movies, but from a business standpoint, it’s hard to argue with the success of franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight which have made bundles of cash from stretching one book into two films. Creatively speaking, this decision has already hurt the first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which moved along at a snail’s pace and ended with a LOTR-esque shot of Bilbo (Martin Freeman) looking across miles of Middle Earth to see the Lonely Mountain in the distance.

But the trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug might help to wash some of that bad taste out of your mouth. This two-minute teaser puts the film’s action sequences at the forefront, and also (finally) gives us a good look at Smaug, the dragon voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. (He also did motion capture work for the character.)

Plus, we get a glimpse of another old friend from The Lord of the Rings saga in Orlando Bloom’s Legolas, who appears to have a relationship with Middle Earth rookie Evangeline Lilly as an elf named Tauriel. As many issues as the first film had, we must admit this trailer gets us excited to see the next entry in the saga. Check it out below:
