The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Battle a Cool Space Monster in New ‘Vol. 2’ Concept Art

By August 22, 2016

One of the most interesting revelations that came from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con this year, was the reveal that the Guardians were actually taking that title seriously in the sequel, being tasked with guarding the galaxy from various threats, monsters, and other villainous foes. While it sounds like the film’s main plot centers around one of those missions going wrong, one of the more striking and fun images from the footage was the team preparing to fight a space monster, who was tearing itself through a hole in the fabric of space.

Director James Gunn revealed some brand new concept art from Vol. 2 on Twitter today as well, with the piece itself being featured in the latest issue of Empire Magazine and it seems to depict a kind of variation of that very fight we almost got to see in the SDCC trailer, though whether or not its connected to the main plot regarding Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha is still unknown.

Check out the concept art below:

I think we can all agree that Baby Groot is probably going to steal this whole damn movie, can’t we? After the adorable footage we saw of the character at SDCC and the visual effects being put into this version, he basically looks like the most adorable, kick ass fighting machine that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen.

That combination of fun and action though, was what made the first Guardians so great as well, and it looks like Gunn and co. have managed to continue that same tone and love in the sequel, only this time, they’ve upped the ante tenfold. Plus, just look at that smile.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to hit theatres on May 5th, 2017.
