‘The Martian’ Trailer Shows Matt Damon Fighting to Survive on Mars

By August 19, 2015

Fans of legendary director, Ridley Scott, have grown to be a bit weary of his films the past few years. After consistently disappointing outings with movies like Prometheus, The Counselor, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and more – Scott has been in a bit of a career slump as of late. However, his new film, The Martian, is being marketed as one of the most thrilling new sci-fi films of the past few years. With an interesting mix of dread, adventure, science, and comedy – the film has the potential to be Scott’s return-to-form.

The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Andy Weir, and with a writer like Drew Goddard (Daredevil, The Cabin in the Woods) adapting it for the screen, it seems like The Martian will manage to not only be a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a good movie as well. Considering just how successfully Goddard has been able to blend multiple different genres and tones into his projects in the past too, this rather obscure tone that The Martian is sporting might just be able to work after all.

A new trailer for the movie has been released online, showing new glimpses at Mark Watney’s (Matt Damon) adventures on Mars, as he works to survive until his crew is able to rescue him. Check out the full trailer below:

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

“During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.”

The new trailer seems to follow the same kind of structure and tone of the first one, just showing new footage and story from the movie. There are new glimpses at the kinds of plants Watney is able to grow in the film, but what may end up being even more interesting, is the drama going on back on Earth. The first teaser didn’t really go all that much into the characters or conflict that happens when the crew at home realizes Watney is still alive, so it was nice to get some more insight into that part of the story.

It’s hard not to be excited for The Martian at this point, and while Scott hasn’t been able to strike gold in almost a decade of filmmaking at this point, I’m hoping that this ends up being the first film to pull him out of his downward spiral. The Martian has the potential to Scott’s saving grace at this point, or it could be the last nail in his career’s coffin. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The Martian is set to hit theatres on October 2nd.
