The Russo Brothers: Some Avengers “Might Not Be around Anymore”

By January 13, 2016

From the moment the news of Civil War broke excitement was followed by pure horror for comic book readers. It was an immediate thought of “Yes! They are making one of the best comic book storylines ever!” quickly followed by “Oh no, people are going to die.”

Joe and Anthony Russo are the new two headed version of Joss Whedon who, after directing The Winter Soldier, are now tasked with both Civil War and another little super heroes are probably going to die movie called  Avengers: Infinity War. According to Screenrant, the brothers were talking at Wizard World Comic Con New Orleans and mentioned having a whopping  67 different Marvel characters sitting on a board right now set to have a role in the Infinity War films. Sixty-seven. SIXTY-SEVEN.

That’s a lot of tights in one place! According to the Russo brothers, this may mean the Avengers currently at the forefront may have to take a step back and some may not be around at all:

Everything is finite, right? Nothing can last forever. It’s cyclical. Some new Avengers in phase 4 are going to become prominent and then maybe some Avengers might not be around anymore. So, we’ll see how all this plays out but you have to treat every character with respect. I think it’s interesting that if you’ve seen four or five movies with the lead character having an arc, I want to see some story telling from some of the secondary characters. We’re focusing on that right now with Infinity War while we’re breaking into those movies, is which characters can we pull to the forefront who potentially haven’t had their own ‘A’ story arc to this point. I think you’ll see that the supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers.

We all knew at the end of Age of Ultron that Marvel would be pushing the newer characters to the forefront of the Avengers. The real question is about contracts and storylines. As much as we’d love to keep Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark or Chris Evans as Captain America forever; it just isn’t going to happen. Some of these stories have to end and that’s scary, knowing that some main characters are going to be gone forever.

So, GeekNation which superheroes do you think we’re going to lose? As always, stay tuned for more updates on Marvel killing people off.

Mike Holtz is just a guy looking for any excuse to talk movies and needs to be able to give people a legitimate reason to spend what they spend on popcorn each month. The Dad to a superhero little girl with another on the way, Mike's also written for a few cool websites and talked for a few more. Also, Mike cries like a school girl every time he watches 'Rocky.'

Uh, Civil War is NOT “one of the best comic book storylines ever!” It could have been, but it wasn’t. I’m looking forward to Marvel’s re-envisioning of the story, as they’ve done with all of their stories. This story needs it.
