‘The Walking Dead’ Casts Ezekiel, Season 7 Premiere Date and First Trailer Revealed

By July 22, 2016

Following its divisive (to say the least) season six finale, The Walking Dead returned to San Diego Comic-Con with a bit of a bang for fans. Not only confirming long-rumored characters for the highly-anticipated seventh season later this Fall, but also confirming the new season’s premiere date as well, which up to this point was a mystery. First up, it looks like one of the most interesting leaders from the comics is finally about to make his debut this year.

During the show’s Hall H panel, it was revealed that actor Khary Payton (Teen Titans, General Hospital) will be playing Ezekiel in the new series, a charismatic leader of the Kingdom, a new group of survivors set to be introduced in the new season. The character’s introduction had long been rumored by fans as well, ever since several hints and Easter Eggs connecting back to the character were included in the final episodes of season six.

The first look at Ezekiel and his pet tiger, Shiva, were revealed in the official season 7 trailer also:

It was also announced that the seventh season will stay in line with the previous six, and is set to premiere on October 23rd on AMC.

Ezekiel was the most theorized characters set to be introduced in season seven, and it looks like the fans’ wishes are finally about to come true as well. The character, who was first introduced in issue 108 of the comic book, is a former zookeeper who with Shiva, looks over the community.

With the introduction of both he and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) now as well, can fans expect to see the epic five-issue “All Out War” story from the comics translated to the big screen in the new season? The show has a habit of dragging their storylines out, so I don’t know if we’ll quite get there this season or not, but it’d certainly be a conflict unlike any other the show has seen, if it does indeed end up happening. Fingers crossed.

The Walking Dead will return for its seventh season on October 23rd on AMC.
