While we all wait impatiently throughout the next several months to find out just who it was that Negan actually killed in the season six finale of The Walking Dead (#StillNotOverIt), the theories about the directions that the upcoming seventh season could take have become to become more of a focal point amongst the fan community in the weeks following the divisive finale. Maybe more than anything else as well, it seems like everyone has a theory about who could be introduced in the new season.
It certainly seems like fans are basically expecting Ezekiel, his pet tiger Shiva, and The Kingdom to be introduced at this point, but according to one of the key creative voices on the series right now, seven season is going to expand the entire world of The Walking Dead in more ways than one.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer and director Greg Nicotero teased the season’s large expansions and new characters:
“You’re opening a new chapter and you’re going into a different direction, and that’s where we are, and it’s going to happen pretty rapidly and pretty dramatically as we get into episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4. We’re really going to get a great sense of a larger world and what these different communities are like, who the people are that are there and what they have to offer, so for us, it’s very exciting. The scripts are fantastic. You know, the first episode, obviously, was pretty intense and pretty brutal, and pretty sad and emotional and definitely a challenge for everybody involved to sort of take us to this different place, but the show has a lot of really unique flavors to offer.”
When asked specifically about Ezekiel and co. in the new season also, Nicotero responded cryptically:
“I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to get a chance to meet a lot of new people.”
Like every year, the show already has a very large presence at San Diego Comic-Con this week and luckily, fans won’t have to wait all that long to find out more about the new season with its Hall H panel this weekend. I imagine some casting announcements will be made and possibly some footage will be shown, but as they struggle to continue ridiculously keeping the identity of Negan’s victim a secret, they’ll have to be very careful about what they choose to announced this weekend, and what they don’t.
The Walking Dead season 7 will premiere this Fall.
