The Young Han Solo Spin-Off Film Will Also Tell Chewbacca’s Origin Story

By March 8, 2016

While Disney and Lucasfilm continue their near-impossible search for a young Han Solo, it looks like some interesting new details have been revealed about the 2018 spin-off film, which will tell an origin story (we think) of the iconic Star Wars character, in a film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Now, TheWrap is reporting that not only will the spin-off film be telling Han Solo’s origin story, but it will also be telling Chewbacca’s, which likely means we’ll get to see how he and Solo first came into contact, and the story of how they became partners for life.

The news came during Disney Chief Bob Iger’s speech at the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference today, in which he talked about the announced Star Wars films over the next few years, and confirmed the Wookie’s involvement with the following quote:

“‘Rogue One’ … is about a band of rebels plotting to steal the plans to the Death Star,” the Disney boss said. “It takes place right before George Lucas‘s first film, which came out in 1977 and is now called ‘A New Hope.’

We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy,” he continued. “And that’ll come after ‘Star Wars 8’ in 2018. And then there will possibly be more thereafter.”

The character had always been assumed by fans to at least play some kind of role in the spin-off film’s story, but the confirmation that it will be about both his and Han Solo’s origin stories gives more context as to the film’s story as a whole, especially after Kathleen Kennedy’s somewhat vague comments about the film last year.

Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew had been teasing a cool announcement over the past few weeks as well, and while there’s no way of knowing for certain if it was this – it’s certainly a possibility.

The film is being written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, with frontrunners for the title role including Miles Teller, Scott Eastwood, Blake Jenner, Emory Cohen, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, and more. With this news though, it looks like fans might finally get to see the Han and Chewie solo movie they’ve been waiting for. That is, if the studio manages to correctly cast a young Han Solo, which let’s face it, is no easy task to accomplish.

The spin-off film will be released on May 25th, 2018.
