There’s a Fan Petition For George Lucas to Direct ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

By January 8, 2016

2015 marked the beginning of a new age in the Star Wars, not only because The Force Awakens is the first film in the Disney-run Lucasfilm stage, but also because it was the first time a Star Wars film had been directed by someone in the fan generation. While I personally thought J.J. Abrams did a fantastic job at resetting the franchise and setting up amazing things to come, there have been some people let down by the decisions made, and that’s okay.

Now, everyone seems to be excited for Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII which holds possibly the most potential out of any of the upcoming SW-related films, but there seems to be a much more skeptical air surrounding director Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX, even though the movie is ya know, like four years away.

In fact, it looks like some fans out there want the franchise to be returned in some way shape or form to the hands of its creator, George Lucas, with a new petition on, lobbying for Lucas to replace Trevorrow as the director of Episode IX. The petition itself is addressed to Disney, Lucasfilm, and Kathleen Kennedy, and depending on what kind of Star Wars fan you are, you may or may not be surprised to hear that it already has almost 7,000 supporters.

The petition itself makes a strong argument, saying that bringing Lucas back to end the newest trilogy would be a good farewell for both the franchise, and his work on it. Considering some of Lucas’ recent comments about the new films and their direction too, some of you out there might agree with this.

For those of you who don’t though, it does address a somewhat interesting idea that’s come up following the release of The Force Awakens, which is: are you okay with George Lucas officially not having any more involvement in the Star Wars franchise? Personally, I think it’s a necessary step, but I look forward to hearing your thoughts as well, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to hit theatres sometime in 2019.

I’m personally against George coming back as a director now that given the reins to Disney. The original movies may have been great while still being directed by Lucas, but given how the prequel trilogy turned out when he assumed more control over the movie… I want him to direct more Star Wars films as much as I want Shyamalan to make The Last Airbender 2: Bend Harder.

Required viewing regarding the prequel trilogy, a huge number of the problems they had, and why George Lucas should not be trusted with Star Wars again:
