We still don’t know a whole lot about Zack Snyder’s sequel to Man of Steel, aside from its major stars: Henry Cavill returns as Superman, Ben Affleck will play Batman, Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman, Jeremy Irons will play Alfred, and Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor. David Goyer is writing the screenplay, and Argo writer Chris Terrio has been brought on to help in that department. Snyder has gone on record saying the film “won’t be as tied to the mythology” as Man of Steel, and…well, that’s about the extent of what we know. The film is over two years away from being released, after all.
But now EW reports that three new actors have signed on to join the project: Oscar-winner Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, and Tao Okamoto. Film fans will know Hunter from her work in The Piano, Raising Arizona, Broadcast News, and more, while Mulvey and Okamoto are a little less known. Who will they play? That part is still a mystery, though we do have one tantalizing clue: each of their characters will be brand new, created specifically for this film and not appearing anywhere in comics lore. It’s worth noting that each member of this trio has experience in the world of superhero films already: Hunter voiced Elastigirl in The Incredibles, Mulvey plays a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in this week’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Okamoto starred as Mariko Yashida in James Mangold’s The Wolverine.
Here’s what Snyder had to say about the new additions:
Holly has always been one of my favorite actresses. She has immense talent and is always captivating on screen. I had an opportunity to meet her a while back and knew instantly that I had to work with her, so as we began writing the script I made sure to create a role specifically for her.
I just had the good fortune to work with Callan on 300: Rise of an Empire and was very impressed with his incredible talent. He’s a fantastic actor and I’m looking forward to having the chance to work with him again. And, quite simply, Tao is a striking presence whose beauty is aptly rivaled by her amazing abilities as an actress. I’m really excited to have her joining us on this adventure.
Batman vs. Superman opens on May 6th, 2016.
