Tim Curry Joins Cast Of Star Wars: The Clone Wars!

By March 1, 2013

That’s right, darlings. Tim Curry, the man fans know and love as Dr. Frank-N-Furter (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Wadsworth – the butler who buttles (Clue), the evil demon known as Darkness (Legend), Pennywise “we all float” The Clown (Stephen King’s IT) and beyond has officially joined the cast of Star Wars: The Clone Wars as the voice of Emperor Palpatine (a.k.a. Darth Sidious).

Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious

Previously voiced by Ian Abercrombie (best known as Mr. Pitt from Seinfeld) since 2008 for both the SW: TCW tv show and accompanying video games until his death in 2012, Curry’s debut as Palpatine/Sidious was unleashed to a small gathering at an early screening of the season five finale at Lucasfilm’s Presidio HQ.

“Can Curry pull off a charming yet DEADLY as f*** bad guy like Palpatine/Darth Sidious?” you ask.

Let’s review…

There’s Darkness, the evil demon you couldn’t help but wanna make out with in Legend

Then there was Pennywise The Clown from Stephen King’s IT that made me nearly pee my pants out of fear on multiple occasions and gave me a better understanding of friends who’re deathly afraid of clowns (a.k.a. coulrophobia).

And of course, this sexy bitch who’s just a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania…HA HAAAAA

And now he’s the guy who took advantage of a sweet yet misguided young Jedi and turned him into one of the most feared Siths ever created (outside of himself, of course).

Yeah, he’s perfect for the role and Star Wars: The Clone Wars supervising producer Dave Filoni agrees, telling HuffPost’s Bryan Young – “We had an extensive search to find a new voice for Palpatine. It wasn’t just a matter of finding an actor who could to recreate lines from the films. We needed someone to deliver a performance that could stand alongside what Ian McDiarmid and Ian Abercrombie created as this legendary Star Wars character. At the end of the day, there is little question that bringing in an actor of Tim’s caliber was perfect for Chancellor Palpatine. I think fans will find that he delivers the eloquence needed for the Chancellor. His growling, evil, Sidious voice is a delight, because Tim can definitely tap into the dark side when needed. We are fortunate to have him.”

With a voice that can sound like spun silk when ordering your death or crushing your larynx without lifting a finger, I can’t think of anyone else that would be able to carry the torch as successfully as Curry can (and truth be told, I still have a MAD crush on Mr Curry).

All that said, here’s a wee smackerel of what to expect from Tim Curry as he takes on one of Star Wars‘ most notoriously devious characters.

You can check out Tim Curry’s first day on the job as Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious when the season finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars airs this Saturday morning (March 2nd) on Cartoon Network – check your local listings for times!

Welcome to the Star Wars family, sir. I love you.

(Thanks again to Bryan Young and Huffington Post for this amazing piece of news!)

  • He’s awful as Palpatine. Truly horrid… I don’t know what you like about it, and I absolutely adore him usually. He’s just so so worrying for this character. Palpatine voice is kindly and old not boisterous, young… firm.
