Tim Roth’s Character in ‘The Hateful Eight’ Tied To ‘Inglorious Basterds’

By December 20, 2015

Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight is right around the corner, with the 70mm Roadshow version getting a limited release on Christmas Day, and a wide release following on New Year’s Day. It stars Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Walton Goggins, alongside Tarantino mainstays like Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth. In addition to frequently casting the same actors, Tarantino is known for tying his films together through subtle winks and nods (Big Kahuna Burger FTW). According to Roth, The Hateful Eight is no exception as his character has direct ties to a character in one of Tarantino’s other films, Inglorious Basterds.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Roth revealed that his character in The Hateful Eight, Oswaldo “The Little Man” Mobray, is related to someone from Inglorious Basterds:

“He’s connected to one of the characters. I won’t say which one. He’s the great, great grandfather of one of the characters in ‘Inglourious Basterds,'” said Roth.

Oh Quentin, you sneaky devil you.

While Roth declined to say exactly which character in Basterds is Mobray’s descendent, the most obvious candidate is the one who shares the nickname of “The Little Man”, Smithson Utivich (BJ Novak). Utivich is resentful of being called “The Little Man”, which may or may not relate to his heritage and ties to Mobray. Of course, it could be a completely different character. But for now, we’re just going to assume Novak’s character is the one who’s related to Roth’s. If Tarantino ever feels like giving us a definite answer, we’d be happy to hear it.

The Hateful Eight comes out in limited release on Friday, Christmas Day, with wide release the following Friday.
