Tom Hiddleston in Talks for ‘Bond 25’

By May 27, 2016

Just a few days ago, Alex reported that Daniel Craig had turned down a massive deal from MGM to reprise his role as James Bond in two more films. The move didn’t exactly come as a surprise, as Craig had shown disdain for the character and the franchise for quite some time, including during the press tour for Spectre. And after spending the better part of the past decade in the tuxedo, you can’t blame the guy for wanting to step away.

For months, Bond fans have been theorizing about a possible replacement, with Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston emerging as the most popular choices. And today, it looks like one of those fantasy picks might become a reality after all, with Birth.Movies.Death reporting that Hiddleston is currently in “advanced talks” to take over the role of Agent 007.

Their sources confirm that talks have been underway, and Hiddleston is keen to step into the role, but MGM has yet to extend a formal offer. BMD also cautions that while it’s easy to accept this news at face value, there’s also the possibility that this could be a clever ploy by MGM to lure Craig back to the negotiating table – it certainly wouldn’t be the first time a major Hollywood studio engaged in that sort of trickery.

Personally, I think Elba would be the better choice for the role of James Bond – particularly if you’ve seen his work on Luther – but I’m guessing MGM and their financing partners are keenly aware of the type of backlash that could occur from casting a black actor as a traditionally white character. Elba has already been dealing with something similar after landing the leading role as Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower, so I couldn’t begin to imagine how much worse it would be if he were announced as the new Bond.

That being said, Hiddleston is far from a bad choice – he’s handsome, charming and always seems to have a bit of mischief bubbling below the surface. We’ve never really seen him in a pure action film before, unless you count his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I’m confident that an actor of his caliber would have no problem assuming the 007 mantle and breathing some much-needed fresh air into the franchise.

We’ll keep you posted on this story as it continues to develop. Stay tuned to Geek Nation!

Just feel like this will take #BOND back to the Pierce Brosnan days which were entertaining but not the depth of Mr Craig’s Films!
