Movie Industry Testing Waters With Walmart and Man Of Steel

By April 24, 2013

This is not a drill.

Hollywood (and more specifically, Warner Bros) is testing the box office revenue waters by not only having retail giant Walmart sell tickets to an advance June 13th screening of Man Of Steel (in both 2D AND 3D), they’re giving them 1 MILLION tickets to sell nationwide at their 3,700 stores beginning 8 a.m. on May 18th (while the more “traditional outlets” have to wait till May 21st or 22nd), giving them a near 4 day jump on the competition.

According to a report from Variety, the 6,372 exclusive advance June 13th screenings will be held in 2,379 theatres; buyers can buy up to four tickets for either the 2D or 3D showings; Walmart will begin promoting sales on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag “#SeeSteelFirst” AND the amount of tix available per store will depend on the size of the store and city that particular Walmart resides.

And not only will they get these SWEET collector’s item tickets, ticket holders will also get a gift bag of sorts that includes a free code to pre-order Man Of Steel (either Blu-ray or HD digital download with exclusive film content) AND a free digital Man Of Steel comic book written by the film’s screenwriter, David Goyer.

“We know the movie delivers and believe this unique partnership will kick off strong word of mouth that, thanks to the reach and immediacy of social media, will propel moviegoers to theaters nationwide.” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution.

Laura Phillips, senior VP of entertainment at Walmart U.S. agrees “We couldn’t be more excited to give our customers and associates early access to one of the summer’s most anticipated movies. Walmart’s premiere of Man of Steel once again proves we have the ambition and studio partnerships to develop unique retail programs that give our customers access to the movies they love.”

And of course, Walmart is also hoping to reap some mad benefits of advance ticket purchasing by offering Man Of Steel merchandise including T-shirts, electronic stuffs, posters, etc, both in-store and online. They’re also supporting the Man Of Steel Experience app which allows customers to take pics with Superman and unlock special photo frames by pointing their smartphone at Man Of Steel signs at their local Walmart.

If the Walmart/Warner Bros partnership goes well, we could very well see studios turning to other giants like Target, Best Buy and Amazon to help boost box office numbers.

After the disappointing numbers from 2006’s Superman Returns, all eyes are on Man Of Steel as this’ll be the litmus test for other DC characters to get their own franchise and/or that possible answer to last year’s The Avengers (Marvel), we’ve been asking for for YEARS – a Justice League film.

Helloooooo, future husband Henry Cavill!

To be perfectly honest, Christopher Reeve will always be MY Superman and I’m fairly convinced that the Blair Witch resides on the second floor of my local Walmart BUT after seeing Henry Cavill wearing the blue so VERY well in all the right places, I could be persuaded.

And if I’m not lucky enough to score a ticket, I’ll be there when the film opens on June 14th.
