Whose Voice Was That In The New ‘Star Wars’ Trailer?

By October 20, 2015

I’m not sure if you were aware of this or not, but a new trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens premiered last night. No really, that totally happened. And it was freaking AWESOME. You should probably watch it again (here you go). Go ahead. I’ll wait.

So yeah, that happened. Another great trailer for what seems to be an amazing movie. So much nerdy excitement is happening right now. As always, there are a lot of questions to address with this trailer. Chief among them: whose mysterious voice is that? It’s obvious we hear Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Adam Driver doing some voiceover work here, but who is that at the beginning asking “Who are you?” Well, surprisingly, Disney was more than happy to let us know pretty quickly after the trailer debuted (check out this post from Disney Insider). Thanks, Disney!

That voice, my dear friends, belongs to none other than Maz Kanata, portrayed by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. While we still don’t know much about the character, and only recently got our first look at her (new poster!). From the brief audio clips heard in the new trailer, it seems she has some connection to the Force and may act as some sort of guide for Rey (Daisy Ridley). Of course, all we can do is speculate at this point, but that’s all part of the fun, right? Maybe she’s instrumental in bringing Rey and Finn together? Maybe she’s the new Yoda? Maybe she knows where the hell Luke is? So many questions, and I love that we won’t get any answers until the movie finally comes out. Seriously, kudos to the marketing team here for not giving too much away. You get a gold star.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens opens December 18th, 2015. Duh.
