‘Wolverine 3’ Could Feature the Onscreen Debut of a New Beloved X-Men Character

By April 20, 2016

Set to be an adaptation of some kind of the classic “Old Man Logan” story, the currently untitled Wolverine 3 is set to hit theatres early next year, and will mark Hugh Jackman’s final onscreen portrayal of the beloved comic book character. It’s been known for quite some time as well, that the film would also feature Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, as the two characters team up for some kind of mission. Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth has also been rumored to possibly be making his return in the film also.

Following the recent casting of Boyd Holbrook as the film’s new, original villain as well, a new rumor suggests that Wolverine 3 could also feature the onscreen debut of a beloved X-Men character who has yet to be given the film treatment.

SuperHeroHype is reporting that the film will apparently feature the appearance of X-23, joining Logan and Professor X on their journey in the film. Make sure to take this news with a grain of salt for now as well, since even the report briefly mentions that this remains unconfirmed for the time being.

Making her comic book introduction in 2004 (after being created in the animated series, X-Men: Evolution), X-23 was part of a program run by a group attempting to replicate and duplicate the Weapon X program, which gave Wolverine his adamantium skeleton. However, at some point, the group decided to instead try and outright clone Logan, and after 22 failed cloning attempts, 23 was the first success.

Similar to Logan, she has retractable claws, with superhuman strength, reflexes, agility, and a healing factor, though she only has two claws in each of her hands instead of three, with an extra that can be popped out of each of her feet. Throughout her time in the comics the character has been a loner as well as a member of both the X-Men and X-Force. X-23 did recently take over the mantle of Wolverine following the character’s recent death as well.

James Mangold will be returning to direct the film after his work on The Wolverine, and the film is said to possibly be rated R as well, which should help to give Jackman and the character the kind of dark, brtual farewell that they both deserve onscreen. Whether or not X-23 ends up being included in the film will have to wait to be seen, but it would be interesting to see if she could possibly act as Wolverine’s replacement in the X-Men Cinematic Universe, following Jackman’s departure. Or if this will be a one-time appearance. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Wolverine 3 is set to hit theatres on March 3rd, 2017.
