We all know that Jason Momoa has been cast as Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and that he’ll reprise that role in an upcoming Justice League movie. This is common knowledge at this point. But Snyder refuses to confirm it for some reason, holding out hope that maybe a handful of people will be surprised to see the guy who played Khal Drogo emerge onto the screen with a trident when his movie debuts in 2016.
This morning, some local radio DJs in Detroit – the city where BVS: DOJ is currently filming – were making fun of Aquaman on the air, and Snyder called in on his way to the set to defend the character. Here’s the full audio of the conversation, but below is the notable section:
You guys were disparaging, a little bit, Aquaman…I don’t want to give anything away about the movie or anything like that but Aquaman has some cool abilities. People are like, ‘Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Cause that seems like what he does. Or fish?’ The cool thing with Aquaman his trident, people don’t realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. He’s super strong cause of course he can exist at these super deep depths so when he comes up here, it’s like he’s crazy strong. Anyway, not to say he’s in my movie or anything like that…but he has the potential to be badass, that’s all I’m saying.
So there you have it. I’ve never read an Aquaman comic, so I had no clue about the whole “trident being able to cut Superman” thing, and I guess I never thought about him having super strength because he lives at pressurized depths under the ocean, but I suppose it makes sense in a comic book sort of way. All I know is that Jason Momoa is a freaking huge dude, because when he came in to our offices to record a Tweet Out (below), it was clear to me that he could snap me in half without breaking a sweat if he wanted to. Let’s just say once people see him on screen, they probably won’t have to do much to justify how he’s a super strong badass.
