Zoe Saldana Teases Nebula and Gamora’s Relationship in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

By July 17, 2016

One of the biggest questions leaving Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 coming from fans, was what would happen next to Karen Gillan’s Nebula, especially since she was confirmed to be returning in next year’s sequel. After a new piece of concept art seemed to hint at a possible, better relationship between her and the rest of the Guardians as well, was it possible that she wouldn’t be heading down quite as villainous of a path as we had thought?

While promoting her new film, Star Trek Beyond, Zoe Saldana, who plays Nebula’s sister, Gamaora, in the film spoke with IGN about Vol. 2 and specifically the relationship between the two sisters in the next film:

“You’ll begin to get a glimpse of how terrible life must have been like to grow up with a crazy stepfather through Nebula. Nebula is still in that teen-y, f*****g hateful s**t. She’s just resentful and bitter.”

So it sounds like we may finally learn more about both Gamora and Nebula’s pasts in the new film, which could provide some much needed insight into Thanos’ past as well, since the Mad Titan has remained a distant figure for a majority of the MCU up until this point:

“Gamora, everything she does is trying to gain redemption for what she’d done before. That’s where you’re going to find her and then, obviously, their relationship is very volatile.”

As for the two sisters’ relationship in the sequel as well, it looks like their shared hatred for Thanos may be one of the biggest reasons for their reunion:

“We’re starting somewhere very crazy but appropriate given where we had ended things off in the first installment. So Thanos is definitely spoken about – not highly.”

Until the first piece of official concept art was released earlier this week, Nebula was one of the most mysterious aspects of the sequel, and with the news that she’ll actually be teaming up with the Guardians in the new film, it changes a lot of what we thought we had known or assumed about the sequel. The film has been described all around as an even more personal journey for all of the Guardians this time around, and with San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner now, we hopefully won’t have to wait much longer to learn some actual real details about the highly-anticipated follow-up.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to hit theatres on May 5th, 2017.
